When you are logged in to LanguageLinker and you are in the ‘my profile’ area, you can see all of your messages (old and new) under ‘my messages’. In the ‘My Messages’ area you will see:
- Exchange requests you have received from other users – you have the option to accept or decline these.
- New messages from your exchange friends - you can click ‘reply’ on these which will then take you directly to the conversation page with that friend where you can write back to them. Or if preferred you can mark the message as read <√> and respond to the message later. If you choose this option it will take off the number on the new message counter.
(The number of unread messages and pending applications are reflected in the counter – next to where it says ‘My Messages’ on the right hand side).
10. How does the ‘My exchanges’ part work?
When logged in to LanguageLinker under ‘My Account’, you have the ‘My exchanges’ part where other members that you have accepted language exchanges with are listed. Here you can communicate with those members (your exchange friends) through instant messages/chat (if you're both online at the same time) or by sending a message if they’re not currently online.

Once you are logged in to LanguageLinker, go to ‘My Account’ and to ‘My exchanges’. Here you can view the list of all your exchange friends, if the people of your list are also online at this time a green round icon will appear next to their name (if it is red it means they are not currently online).
If it is a green round icon you can now start a live chat! Simply click ‘chat’ and the message page you have with that exchange friend will open – this page is the same where you normally send messages from but if the person is online they will see a box appear to say ‘(your name here) is writing to you) and the message will instantly send as soon as you hit send giving that person a new message, with this instant messaging you can enter into a live conversation!
Whenever someone writes in chat mode a prompt appears on the screen. You can click on this notice to directly enter the conversation.
12. How do I remove a member from my exchanges?
Once logged in to LanguageLinker go to ‘My Account’ go to ‘My exchanges’ and all your exchanges are listed.
Just to the right of where it says ‘send a message’ on each individual person there is a symbol of a figure with a red mark in front of it – click on this symbol and will take you to a page to confirm that you wish to delete. Click ‘Yes, delete this user from my exchanges’.
13. What happens if I delete a user from my exchange?
When you delete a user from my exchanges, it disappears from your contacts along with all messages you have ever received from them or sent and your communication stops.
You cannot then get in touch with this person again unless you send a new exchange request – which then also has to be accepted by the other person once more.
14. I don’t want to receive any more exchange requests, how do I hide my profile in the search results?
If you do not want to receive any further requests for a language exchange, there is an option to hide your profile and not appear in search results in the ‘search for a language exchange’ area.
To do this, log in to LanguageLinker and go to “My profile“ and click “Edit Profile“. Within the options near the bottom is “Availability“. Check this box if you no longer wish to appear on the search results and then click on “Save changes“. You will now no longer receive any new exchange requests but you can continue to communicate with your accepted language exchange friends.
15. I want to recommend LanguageLinker - how do I invite a friend?
Maybe you know someone who would be interested LanguageLinker??! Invite them to join by going to the ‘My Account’ area (once you are logged in) and clicking on the ‘Invite a friend’ option. Here you will see a box where you can type the email address of the person you want to invite, and click on “send“. This person will now receive an invitation on your behalf recommending them to join LanguageLinker join.
LanguageLinker does not store or make in proper use of email addresses that are used to invite a friend.
16. How I can re-submit an exchange request to someone that has not accepted my previous request?
When you send an exchange request, you then have to wait to be accepted or rejected. In case of rejection, you will not receive any notice. Unless you receive notification that your request has been accepted you cannot start to contact with that member and no further request can be sent.
For cases where a request has been mistakenly rejected or deleted, we have established a period of three months in order to restore the option to re-submit a request for exchange to the same user.
17. What if I don’t accept a language exchange request?
In the ‘My Messages’ area (once you are logged in) you will see any new requests for a language exchange with the options to either accept or reject.
If you reject, the message is simply removed and the other user does not know. It is then impossible for this member to request you again for three months after which time, the option is restored again to send an exchange request.
If you accept an exchange request, the other member becomes part of your contacts in the ‘My exchanges’ list where you can begin to communicate.
18. I have suggestions or need information , how do I contact LanguageLinker?
We love to hear the opinions and suggestions from our members. This helps us improve the website for you, our members.

19. I have received a suspicious message or abusive message – how can I report this?
LanguageLinker does not tolerate bullying, abusive or suspicious messages of any kind and we take every action to prevent such things from happening.
Unfortunately this day and age it is impossible to stop 100% of this happening therefore we ask all members to report by email (info@languagelinker .com) such behavior immediately.
All messages that you send between other members is private content, and you are the only one that has access to your account. Therefore if you have received any messages that you consider to be rude, abusive or offensive, or you are aware of another member breaking the terms and conditions of the website, please report this to us straight away so that we can take action.
We have incorporated into your account, in the ‘My exchanges’ area, the option to delete any unwanted exchanges. Once deleted this will prevent that person from sending you any further messages.
For us, the safety of our members is very important and therefore we suggest that, whenever you start an exchange request, be in contact with this person on the website, do not provide them with your personal email address or contact details.
20. I do not want to receive an email to advise I have a new message/s on LanguageLinker – how do I stop receiving these?
This automated email to advise you have a new message/s when one of your contacts (in ‘My exchanges’) has written to you in the last 24 hours and you have not yet logged in to your account and essentially ‘seen’ the message.
If you do not wish to receive this type of email you can cancel it in two ways:
In the same email that you have received advising you that you have a new message, at the you have the option to ‘unsubscribe’ simply click on ‘Unsubscribe’.
The second option is log in to your LanguageLinker account and go to ‘My profile’, click ‘Edit profile’. Within your profile options, all the way down the page, check the ‘Notifications’ option and click on “Save Changes“.
Of course once you have read the message the email will not be sent to you, or you can click the ‘mark as read’ option on the message also acknowledging that you have seen the message and the email for this message will no longer be sent to you.
21. How can I unsubscribe from LanguageLinker?
We hope you never want to leave us but if you do log in to LanguageLinker and go to ‘My profile’, click ‘Edit profile’. Right at the bottom is the ‘Unsubscribe’ option :(. Click on this and a confirmation notice will appear. Read the important message that appears and if click on the ‘Yes’ button to confirm you wish to ‘unsubscribe’. Once this is done it will delete your account, including all your messages and posts.
This operation is irreversible and can not be undone, so we would like you to consider the option of simply hiding your profile by checking the “Availability“ (under ‘Edit profile’), if you prefer to just take a break from the website instead, you can then come back to LanguageLinker at any time without having lost any of your contacts or messages.
